Arrivals and Departures. Galicia, Spain.
Tom and I loved making these split wood baskets after an extraordinary cycle (uphill all the way) to Lluis Grau's house in Galicia. Lluis and Anna live in a remote part north west Spain, well off the beaten track.
We worked hard every day, learning an age old technique of splitting coppice wood after gently heating the it over a fire. We spent 3 days splitting the wood into thin strips and two days making a basket each. We were fuelled by plenty of tapas, freshly picked vegetables from Lluis garden and a dip in the river.
Thanks to the Arts Council and Farnham Maltings for our Arrivals and Departures Bursary which made this trip possible.
