Small frame basket - 29 March 2018

ABOUT THIS DAY:
Using beautiful coloured willow grown by Annemarie and Tom, you will learn to make a simple and beautiful frame basket. You will work with techniques traditionally used in the countryside by gypsies and agricultural workers. Perfect as a small fruit bowl or bread basket. The basket will be a shallow vessel approximately 30cm long.

·       How to prepare and select willow for weaving

·       How to make a hoop and set the ribs

Introduction to Willow Basketry - 7 & 8 April 2018

Using beautiful native willow, you will learn to make a simple and beautiful round basket. A great course for beginners or anyone wishing to improve their willow basketmaking skills.

How to wrap 5 eggs -  an experimental basketmaking day - 19 April 2018

ABOUT THIS DAY:

This is a playful and experimental day, working with an array of beautiful materials, textures and weaves, perfect for anyone interested in the crossover between textiles and basketry.

Using the beautiful and iconic Japanese catalogue ‘How to wrap 5 eggs’  as a focus,  you will be guided through various techniques in weaving and binding to produce a collection of samples using both soft and hard materials.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN:

·       How to wrap 4 or 5 eggs using rush and simple a simple twining

·       Techniques including: Pairing, reverse pairing, folding, plaiting, cordage, knotting, packaging, wrapping

·       How to combine soft and rigid materials to make a vessel or package

·       How to use rush, raffia, flax, phormium, wire, willow, paper

Make a Plant support - 21 April 2018

ABOUT THIS DAY:
Make a large or small willow plant support from locally grown, freshly harvested willow. Using this beautiful native willow, you will learn one basic but very strong weave. You will create a spiralling weave. Learn to bind your plant support by cranking the willow. All the techniques used are helpful for other willow garden projects. These plant supports are great for supporting sweet peas and other climbing plants in your garden. This workshop will be quite a physical day and some of the work will be done kneeling, if you have trouble kneeling please let us know and we can cater for your needs. Because of the size of the structures you will be working outside, so please be prepared for April weather (coat and sturdy shoes). Time permitting; there will be the opportunity to make a second smaller structure.

Make a garden sphere - 22 April 2018

ABOUT THIS DAY:
During this workshop you will create a beautiful sculptural sphere for your garden. Using freshly cut flexible willow you will make a sphere using some simple random weave techniques.  Begin by learning to make strong hoops. Learn to create a mesh with willow and to use a variety of colours to create overlays. Through learning these initial techniques you will then have more creative freedom, creating an individual and personal piece. Your sphere will be approximately 40-50cm in diameter.

Willow Basket making week - 10 - 14 September 2018

ABOUT THIS COURSE:
Immerse yourself in a week long course at Annemarie and Tom’s studio in East Sussex.

This is an in-depth week of willow weaving, working through the basics of round willow basketry from start of finish. You will make at least two pieces of work during the course and will be able to add handles.

The skills learnt on this course will enable you to continue exploring your creativity through basket weaving at a later date. For intermediate basket weavers this course will give you an opportunity to further your existing skills and explore more complex weaving techniques.

We will have a celebratory dinner out on the penultimate evening.

Willow frame basket workshop - Chateau Dumas, France - June 2018

I'll be teaching again at the amazing Chateau Dumas, France in June 2018. This year the week long workshop will focus on making frame baskets. This is a chance to enjoy a luxurious week in France while immersing yourself in this ancient craft.
