Fluent

Porthmeor Studios, St.Ives, Cornwall in 2019.

The piece was a response to an amazing space, a traditional Pilchard fisherman’s cellar from a time when the Pilchard Industry was one of the largest sources of income for this remote part of the UK. One half of the space had been curated by American artist Mark Dion using the artefacts left behind by one of the last active Pilchard fishermen.

The flowing installation made using Ash veneer and cane ties represents the relationship with the sea and the changing fortunes of the people who occupied the space. The looping Ash sits on top of a huge concrete tank which would have stored the Pilchards before they were barrelled and exported, mostly to Spain and Italy.
